Outrage over Rafah camp massacre

Herald Correspondent

THERE is global outrage following the deliberate killing of nearly 50 Palestinians in Rafah, Bureij Camp and Jabalia, by Israeli forces late on Sunday, in their continued bombardment of the Gaza Strip in the last 234 days.

Palestine Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Dr Tamer Almassri, yesterday condemned the killing of Palestinians, saying the acts were in violation of the International Court of Justice’s ruling.

He said the Israeli occupation forces also committed eight massacres against families in the Gaza Strip over the last 24 hours, resulting in the documented killing of at least 50 people while 223 were injured.

“The Israeli attacks come at a time the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Israel, the occupying power, to immediately stop its military operations in the Rafah city, and to maintain the opening of the Rafah crossing to enable the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip,” said Amb  Almassri.

“This act defies the rulings of the International Court of Justice and constitutes a severe violation of international law and international humanitarian law.”

Amb Almassri said Israeli forces were committing war crimes that the international community must confront, ensuring accountability for those responsible.

About 35 984 Palestinians have been killed, the majority of them being children and women, while over 80 000 have been injured.

The Kuwait Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the attack was “an unprecedented genocide and blatant war crime”.

Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said it views the Israeli action of slaughtering Palestinian refugees as a “grave violation of international laws and a further exacerbation of the already dire humanitarian crisis in the besieged territory”.

In a statement yesterday, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said: “Egypt condemns in the strongest terms the deliberate Israeli airstrike on tents of displaced people in the Palestinian city of Rafah, which resulted in hundreds of casualties.”

Egypt said the airstrike was “a blatant violation of the provisions of international humanitarian law and the Fourth Geneva Convention of 1949 on the protection of civilians in times of war.”

“This tragic event is a continuation of targeting unarmed civilians . . and reflects a systematic policy aimed at expanding the scope of killing and destruction in Gaza, rendering it uninhabitable.”

It also called on the UN Security Council to “urgently intervene” to ensure an immediate cease-fire in the Palestinian enclave and end military operations in Rafah.

Jordan said the Israeli attack was “a blatant defiance of the decisions of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and a serious violation of international law and international humanitarian law.” – Additional Reporting: First Channel News.
