Over 2 million sign anti-sanctions petition

Government intends to use the petition in regional and international forums to call for the lifting of the decade old Western embargo.
The European Union and the United States imposed illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe in retaliation against land reforms undertaken by the Government.
Zanu-PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo told New Ziana there had been an overwhelming response to the petition.
“The process is going on well and the response so far has been great,” he said.
“Over two million people have signed the petition already. We are currently experiencing shortages of petition forms due to the overwhelming response.”
Other than showing displeasure over the illegal sanctions, the petition also sought to enlighten people on the impact sanctions have on the country, he said.
“This process is also giving awareness to the people that the problems they face emanate from the imposition of sanctions,” he said.
The sanctions, Cde Gumbo said, were not targeted as some wanted the world to believe.
Zimbabwe’s economy has as a result of the sanctions suffered from lack of foreign direct investment as well as absence of support from multi-lateral institutions such as the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. – New Ziana
