But Karuru has been frozen out of the national team because of a frosty relationship with coach Rahman Gumbo. The fallout was triggered by an incident in Maputo in June when Karuru, when presented with a chance to score, opted to pass to Knowledge Musona and the opportunity was lost.
Rahman famously told the media that he would have “killed” Ovidy, if he was his teammate, for blowing that chance. The 2014 World Cup qualifier between Zimbabwe and Mozambique ended in a 0-0 stalemate leaving the two neighbours bottom of their group, with one point apiece, while Egypt have done the early running with six points from two matches.
Karuru’s omission in the team has been as much a talking point as that of Charlton Athletic midfielder, Bradley Pritchard, who was called for the opening World Cup qualifier against Guinea but was never drafted into the final team. Pritchard plays and stars consistently in the Championship, the second-tier league in English football.
Karuru posted on his Facebook wall, shortly after the game ended in Luanda, that he was a heartbroken man.
“HEART BROKEN . . . NZARA YABVA YAPERA AND SIMBA RACHO ZVESE,” he wrote.
His post triggered a number of responses. Some of the fans said leaving Karuru behind was as horrible as Argentina leaving Lionel Messi from their team and still expecting to do very well.
