in the 1800s.
Mostly, the selected pieces done in different painting styles consist of reproduction of works under the “Old Masters” theme.
“This is one show that will encourage artists to have an appreciation of art and how they can get involved in modern art. National Gallery of Zimbabwe takes visual art lovers through the history of paintings with a presentation of works from the 1800s that are currently on exhibition,” said exhibition curator Lilian Chaonwa.
The exhibition being held courtesy of the Conservation and Collections Department of the National Gallery of Zimbabwe and the education department is made up of selected production works of old masters paintings.
Works on display are characterised by various artistic skills and a sense of distinctive beauty which has kept the artwork popular through the centuries. There is also a huge assortment of artistic styles and techniques that are also presented at the exhibition.
The term, “Old Masters”, is regularly used in the art world as a means of separating the great European artists of yesteryear from the famous painters of the modern era.
The exhibition is targeted at students in an attempt to assist them with visual material which they can make reference to when responding to their school art syllabus being learnt at the Visual Art School in Mbare and at the main gallery.
