Two Harare men allegedly barricaded a dust road from New Tafara to Zimre Park, smashed the window of a Volvo V40 and stabbed the driver to death before stealing the vehicle.
John Mabhunu (28) of Block 4 C34 Matapi Flats, Mbare in Harare was arrested while putting on the deceased, Oliver Chipepera’s brown pair of shoes.
Mabhunu and Francis Alimoso (32) of 2580 Reuben Maseko Branch in Epworth appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Milton Serima.
The pair, that is facing murder charges, was remanded in custody to October 21 and Mr Serima advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.
Prosecutor Sebastian Mutizirwa, told the court that on September 26 at 8:45pm, Chipepera was driving along a dust road from New Tafara to Zimre Park coming from his second wife’s residence, Spiwe Mtetwa.
It is alleged that he suddenly discovered that the road was barricaded with large stones and while trying to negotiate his way past the stones, Mabhunu, Alimoso and their accomplice Last Sithole, who is still on the run appeared from nowhere in the darkness.
They allegedly smashed the window on the driver’s side and manhandled the deceased out of the vehicle through the broken window.
Mabhunu, who was armed with an okapi knife, allegedly stabbed Chipepera on the right shoulder and on the chest before they drove off with the vehicle.
On October 3, 2014, detectives received a tip off that Mabhunu was allegedly involved in the murder and arrested him at Mbare Musika.
During interrogations, Mabhunu allegedly admitted to the murder and implicated Alimoso and Sithole.
He also admitted that the pair of brown shoes he was wearing belonged to the deceased.
It is alleged that he agreed with the detectives to lure Alimoso to Domboramwari Shopping Centre on the pretext that they would go for a beer drink and he was subsequently arrested.
The pair allegedly told the police how they committed the offence and robbed the deceased of US$1 000, a mobile phone and the brown pair of shoes.
