Two robbers from Beatrice will each serve two years and four months in jail for robbing a farm worker in his house at knife- point. John Bure (28) and Petros Chakabvapasi (31) of Chief Murambwa in Mhondoro and Exceisor Farm in Beatrice, respectively, pleaded guilty to robbery charges. They appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mrs Renika Dzikiti, who sentenced them each to three years in prison.
Mrs Dzikiti, however, conditionally set aside six months for five years.
Two other months were suspended on condition they each pay $60 to Sign Chirenje of Brakveld Farm in Beatrice.
In passing sentence, Mrs Dzikiti took into account that the offence was premeditated.
“You planned to rob the complainant and on committing the offence, you bundled him with a blanket on his head before gagging him with a jacket. Had it not been that he managed to free himself, he would have died due to suffocation,” she said.
Prosecutor Mrs Ntombikayise Nleya proved that on August 2 this year at around 7pm, the duo in the company of Jonas Chivovori still at large, went to Chirenje’s house with the intention to steal.
Upon arrival, they pushed the door open and found him asleep.
Immediately, the trio grabbed and rolled him with a blanket over his head, gagging him with a jacket and tied his hands behind.
They started assaulting him and poking him with a knife all over his body demanding money.
When they finished assaulting him, they looted various electrical gadgets and escaped.
The following day, Chirenje reported the matter to the police leading to Chakabvapasi’s arrest.
Upon being interrogated, he implicated Bure who was also arrested. The two led police to the recovery of some of the stolen property.
