TWO Gwanda men who stole about $2 000 cash from Mkashi Farm in West Nicholson so that they could each attend to pressing problems, were each sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
One convict wanted to pay labola while the other wanted money to pay for a new passport.
Paddington Sibanda (19) and Hardlife Khoza (21) both of Village 2, Dwala area in the Gwanda District, were convicted on their own plea to unlawful entry and theft by Gwanda magistrate, Mr Arafat Kozanai.
The pair broke into Mkashi Farm workshop and stole $1 895 cash belonging to Mr Saffer Mathonsi. A total of $1 052 was recovered following the pair’s arrest.
The two who were each sentenced to 12 months imprisonment will each serve an effective six months after the three months of their sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.
The other three months were suspended on condition that they pay the complainant the money which was not recovered.
Sibanda told the court that he stole the money because he wanted to pay for a new passport while Khoza said he wanted to use the money to pay lobola for his girlfriend.
The State represented by Miss Chipo Maposa told the court that on 28 October, the two men connived and went to Mkashi Farm workshop.
They took advantage of a broken office window pane and opened the window from outside before they got inside.
They stole some keys which were in the workshop and went out through the same window before they proceeded to use the keys to unlock the storeroom.
After gaining entry into the storeroom, the two stole $1 895 and went away unnoticed. The matter was reported to the police who investigated the matter leading to the arrest of the two.
Police recovered $527 from Sibanda and $525 from Khoza.
Also recovered were some goods valued at $240 which the two had bought using the stolen money.
