Pair kills woman, rape corpse

Munyaradzi Doma in Zvishavane
Two Zvishavane men allegedly fatally hacked a woman with a machete and one of them allegedly raped the corpse before dumping it in a seven-metre disused mine shaft.

It is alleged that after committing the grisly crime, Tatenda Ngwenya (22) and Givemore Matumba (25) of Murambi Village under Chief Mazvihwa strapped Gladys Zembeti’s nine-year-old child on her corpse before throwing her lifeless body into the shaft.

Zembeti’s child miraculously survived and was retrieved out of the shaft.

Ngwenya and Matumba have since appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja facing murder and attempted murder charges.

Mr Mjanja remanded Ngwenya and Matumba in custody to February 7 and advised them to apply for bail at the High Court.

Prosecutor Ms Sheila Mupindu alleged that on December 21 last year, the pair went to Zembeti’s homestead in Murambi Village and fatally attacked her with a machete.

It is said that one of the two men raped Zembeti’s lifeless body and thereafter strapped her child, who was at the homestead, to her corpse.

They proceeded to throw Zembeti’s body and her child in the shaft.

The State also alleges that the two proceeded to attack Zembeti’s relatives — Amity Gumbo, Desire Moyo, Tatenda Rimuka and Godknows Gumbo — at the homestead.

The quartet sustained serious injuries from the attack.
