TWO men from Bulawayo’s Cowdray Park suburb were recently arrested after being found in possession of counterfeit notes amounting to $180.Tinashe Murenzve, 24, and Elmon Mutonhori, 28, appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Tancy Dube charged with possessing fake money.
Prosecuting Frank Ncube said on May 24 at around 8PM at Basic Shops in Lobengula, Murenzve and Mutonhori were found with the fake notes that they intended to use for unlawful purposes.
In court, a police officer Anania Utete said he was tipped off that the duo had fake money. He arrested them, but the duo was said to have attempted to run away and had been violent.
Murenzve and Mutonhori both admitted that they had been in possession of the fake notes.
“I do admit having fake money but I also obtained the money from a certain man who bought body lotion from me. I took the money not knowing it was fake,” said Murenzve.
Magistrate Dube remanded the duo in custody.
Of late police have been warning, members of the public about conmen who were using fake United States dollar notes to buy goods in rural areas and along highways and getting change in genuine notes.
