PROLIFIC Bulawayo-based writer Philani Amadeus Nyoni (PAN), is a polished wordsmith who has created distinguished work as evidenced by the number of accolades he has scooped in the past two years.
Following an extraordinary 2024 where he clinched three prestigious awards within just five months, Nyoni carried his formidable momentum into 2025, solidifying his status as a leading force in contemporary African literature while simultaneously elevating his peers.
PAN, who has long harboured the ambition to be the flame that engulfs the city’s book sector, saw that vision blaze brightly last year.
His individual prowess shone, culminating in four major awards.
However, his triumphs extended far beyond personal glory. 2025 also saw him share the winner’s podium with fellow authors, business partners, and close friends, Sipho Mpofu and Busani Ncube, underscoring his commitment to collective success.
This collaborative spirit reached an international crescendo when Nyoni’s powerful short story, Sunday, earned a coveted shortlisting for the prestigious Varnish Prize for Fiction, placing his distinctive voice on the global literary map.
The winning streak shows no sign of abating in 2026. Nyoni recently claimed the Bulawayo Arts Awards’ “Pathisa Nyathi” Outstanding Literary Work award for his critically acclaimed collection, “The Testament of Black Jesus.”
Adding another international feather to his cap, he secured the 2025 Botswana Literature Awards’ Asian Prize for African Short-Story.
Crucially, PAN’s influence as a mentor and editor is proving equally award-winning.
His editing expertise was instrumental in the successes of his colleagues, Sipho Mpofu who won the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Award at the 2025 Botswana Literature Awards.
Mpofu’s novel, “My Affair with Misfortune,” also achieved significant recognition as the Second Runner Up in the Fiction category at the Phoenix Publishing Book Awards.
Busani Ncube, who co-owner the arts hub Elane Arts, together with PAN, triumphed at the Phoenix Publishing Book Awards, taking the top spot in the poetry category for his collection, I Know Why Teeth Were Made White.
PAN edited both Mpofu and Ncube’s award-winning works, a role he cherishes deeply.
“It’s exhilarating to see someone walking in their dreams. I am honoured to be part of that fulfilment and to pay forward what people like Chirikure Chirikure, David Mungoshi, John Eppel, Noviolet Bulawayo and many others did for me,” said PAN.
Reflecting on this remarkable period, Nyoni expressed profound gratitude as he revealed that such achievements (awards) fills him with gratitude, and confirms that the path that chose him has not abandoned him.
“Also, our work is not about winning awards. We want to be more intentional with quality. We want to reach out to other spaces so that our voices are heard with no ambiguity. In short, we want to rise to the best of our abilities,” said PAN.
