THE Matabeleland North Basketball League (MNBL) 2024-25 season came to a pulsating conclusion, with Victoria Falls Panthers stamping their authority as undisputed champions in a campaign that kept fans on the edge of their seats.

Under the astute leadership of their towering talisman, Bernard Chirwa, the Panthers roared to glory, dismantling opponents with sheer dominance to claim the title. Victoria Falls Suns put up a commendable fight, securing the runners-up spot, while Royal Eagles Academy of Hwange settled for third place in a season that showcased the league’s growing competitiveness. Hwange Titans wrapped up the top four standings.

Chirwa was a force to be reckoned with throughout the season, dominating the paint with power and precision. His influence on both ends of the court was undeniable, and his heroics saw him deservedly crowned the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). His commanding performances were the backbone of the Panthers’ championship charge, cementing his status as one of the league’s finest.

Hot on his heels was Victoria Falls Suns’ standout performer, Tashinga Bara, who finished as the MVP first runner-up, while seasoned campaigner Tadiwa Kunaka of the Panthers secured third place in the MVP rankings. The league also unearthed a gem in Munashe Kakurira, whose electrifying displays earned him the Rookie of the Season accolade, marking him as one of the most promising young talents to watch.

Behind the scenes, the league paid tribute to Ivy Sibanda for her invaluable contributions as a table official, emphasising the critical role played by officials in ensuring the smooth running of the competition.

With the league champions now primed to represent Matabeleland North at the Basketball Union of Zimbabwe (BUZ) National Championships, MNBL Commissioner and Panthers head coach Brighton Musaidzi, reflected on a fiercely contested season.

“This season was nothing short of exhilarating, with Victoria Falls teams proving their mettle. Now, we turn our focus to the national championships, and we are in the process of assembling a squad that will be competitive on that stage. We have players from Botswana and Zambia who we believe will strengthen our team,” said Musaidzi.

He also hailed the Panthers’ success as a triumph of strategy and youth development. “We have always prioritised nurturing young talent, and this season was proof that you can win while giving emerging players a chance. Bernard (Chirwa) was outstanding, but every player in the squad played a crucial role. This was a season where depth mattered, and I’m extremely proud of what we achieved.”

The league’s technical director, Walter Masunda, who also served as player-coach for the Suns, expressed satisfaction with how the season unfolded.

“This was one of the most competitive MNBL seasons we’ve had. Every team showed remarkable improvement, and the quality of play is rising. The fact that the title race went down to the wire speaks volumes about how thrilling this league has become. Congratulations to the Panthers for their championship victory, and hats off to all the teams for making  this such a memorable season,” said Masunda.

As the curtain falls on an enthralling MNBL season, the Panthers now set their sights on making a mark at the national championships, carrying the hopes of Matabeleland North with them. Whether they can extend their dominance onto the grander stage remains to be seen, but  one thing is certain – they have set the bar high.
