BULAWAYO based Panthers Taekwondo Club will be having a graduation ceremony for its athletes next month following a tournament that was held in Harare at the University of Zimbabwe where they came second after scooping seven medals.
The tentative date set for the ceremony is December 2 and will see more than 15 athletes graduating. According to Panthers Instructor, Vusumuzi Ncube, most of the team’s junior members will be elevated to the senior squad.
“Most of the juniors who went to Harare really performed beyond our expectations so most of them will be double grading meaning they will jump other stages because of recommendations. Judging from their fighting and intelligence this is one of the steps that shows the guys are improving,” said Panthers Instructor Ncube.
“I am so happy with the way we did in Harare because the last time we hosted the event was in 2006 we didn’t get a single medal.
“I can say that the guys really made a big difference and it shows that we are growing as a province. Apparently, around the country we are the only club with the kids’ category and it was their first tournament so to me it was a great feeling,” he said.
The team sent 14 athletes to face off with other players from around the country in the Korean Ambassadors Championships last week and they brought home five gold medals, one silver and one bronze medals.
Mbongeni Ncube, Nicole Ncube, Sean Ncube and Shein Mutsamba scooped gold in the children’s category, while Shawn Ncube got silver.
Vusumuzi Ncube and Garry Maziva scooped gold and bronze in the senior and heavy weight categories respectively.
