The Pan African Parliament (PAP) has reiterated calls for the unconditional lifting of illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe, highlighting that the economic embargoes are causing untold suffering to ordinary people.
In a statement released today as Zimbabwe marks the SADC Anti-Sanctions Day, PAP president Chief Fortune Charumbira said the unjustified sanctions undermine Zimbabwe’s development and must be scrapped.
Chief Charumbira hailed the people of Zimbabwe for showing resilience in the face of the illegal sanctions.
The PAP president exhorted all African nations to call for the removal of the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
“Today, the Pan African Parliament joins the Government and people of the Republic of
Zimbabwe and the SADC region at large in calling for the immediate and unconditional removal of the illegal economic sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe,” he said.
“The sanctions have undermined the country’s development and caused untold suffering to its people. Zimbabwe and its people have demonstrated unshakeable resilience and unity of purpose in the face of this unwarranted embargo imposed as a punitive measure after the country successfully reclaimed its land and heritage.”
Chief Charumbira commended the SADC region for standing firmly with Zimbabwe on the issue.
He hailed the regional body for “making a bold declaration that no country should ever be held at ransom for asserting its sovereignty and reclaiming its heritage for the benefit of its people.”
“While the nation continues to gradually etch forward through several sanctions-busting strategies, doubtless, the lifting of sanctions will unlock Zimbabwe’s unbridled potential and pave the way for the country’s accelerated economic growth and contribution to the prosperity of its people, the SADC region and the entire continent.”
Chief Charumbira said the fate of Africans is intertwined, hence the need to stand in unison and push for the complete removal of sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.
