Parents wrangle over child custody

A MUTARE man has dragged his wife to court seeking custody of his two-year-old baby. Simbarashe Kachatigu dragged Faith Machaya to court accusing her of trying to take away the child that she dumped while he was only two-months-old. They appeared before Mrs Yeukai Chigodora. Kachatigu described Machaya as a heartless and remorseless mother who is not ready to settle down.

He told the court that Machaya left him and the child almost two years ago to unknown destination, only to come back demanding the child.

“She told me that I am a loser who could not do anything in life. She also said there were better men who could satisfy her financially. She went away from our matrimonial home, leaving me with the two-month-old baby. I took care of that child alone.

“She came back and took the child in my absence saying she would bring her back after three days. A week passed on and I had to make a follow up, only to find out that she no longer wanted to let go off the baby. I want my child, Your Worship,” said Kachatigu.

In response, Machaya denied the allegations that were being levelled against her. She said Kachatigu was the one who left her for another wife. Asked whether she left the child when he was only two-months-old, Machaya stammered.

“I had no option, but to go and look for a job. His parents said I had an evil spirit that could kill the child so I had to leave him with them in 2014. Now I want to stay with the child because of the poor living conditions at Kachatigu’s place,” she said.

Mrs Chigodora ordered the two to go home and wait until the Department of Social Warfare officials visit them to access their living conditions and to verify what really transpired.
