Parirenyatwa ramps up cancer treatment

PARIRENYATWA Group of Hospitals has stepped up cancer treatment services, serving up to 90 patients daily as it works to clear a significant backlog of patients waiting for radiotherapy services.

Head of the Radiotherapy Centre at Parirenyatwa Dr Nothando Mutizira said the hospital was now offering a full range of cancer care, including chemotherapy, brachytherapy and external beam radiotherapy, following the restoration of key equipment.

“We now have two of our three linear accelerators working, as well as one brachytherapy unit, and plans to acquire new machines are at an advanced stage,” she said.

Parirenyatwa is currently the only centre in the country offering radiotherapy, receiving patients from all provinces.

Dr Mutizira said the anticipated re-opening of radiotherapy services at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo would further improve access and reduce waiting times.
