Director general Mr Vitalis Chadenga told New Ziana that the project was worth over a million dollars.
“We want to take advantage of the general assembly which has potential to bring more visitors to our national parks who may need somewhere to sleep,” he said.
Zimbabwe and Zambia will co-host the UNWTO general assembly in August next year.
Mr Chadenga said the refurbishment would be targeted for completion by the time the general assembly kicked off.
He said tourist arrivals especially from Europe, had increased recently, a signal that the country’s image had recovered.
“The negative publicity by the Western media on the country for the past 10 years affected the country’s tourism sector.
“Thus we want to take advantage of the international delegates who will be in the country to offer the best services and redeem the lost image,” he said.
Mr Chadenga commended Government efforts to host international events such as the recently ended African Travel Association (ATA) congress and the UNWTO general assembly to be co-hosted with Zambia next year saying they went a long way in rebranding the country. — New Ziana.
