THE Committee on Standing Rules and Orders (CSRO) of Parliament has called the public to nominate persons to fill six vacancies that will soon arise in the Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC).
The CSRO is mandated by the Constitution to invite the public to nominate candidates for possible appointment by the President to serve as commissioners in Independent Commissions established by Chapter 12 of the Supreme Law.
“The term of the current commissioners of the current ZGC will soon expire, resulting in six vacancies. In light of this, the CSRO invites the public to submit nominations for individuals to be considered for possible appointment to the Commission,” reads a statement from the CSRO.
The public has to submit their nominations to the Clerk of Parliament by September 19.
The functions of the ZGC include, to monitor issues of gender equality as provided for by the Constitution, investigate possible violations of gender rights, to receive and consider complaints from the public and investigate them as it deems appropriate, carry out research into issues related to gender and social justice and recommend changes to laws and policies which lead to discrimination based on gender and to advise public and private institutions on steps to be taken to ensure gender equality.
The ZGC is also tasked with recommending affirmative action to be taken to achieve gender equality, recommending criminal prosecution for violations of gender rights and convening and hosting the Gender Forum.
It can also undertake any other activities as required and permitted by the Zimbabwe Gender Commission Act or any other legislation.
