PARLIAMENT has concluded its three-day Constitutional Amendment No. 3 Bill consultative exercise in Mashonaland West at Kazangarare Business Centre in Hurungwe district.
The consultations were also held in Makonde, Zvimba, Kariba and Sanyati district on Monday and Tuesday, where people resoundingly endorsed the Bill.
At Kazangarare, scores of people who aired their views supported the bill, saying it would give political stability and national development.
They said that by extending the term for President, parliamentarians and councillors from five to seven years, it also meant that the nation was going to save financially.
One of the participants, Mr Silas Chimbiro, supported the bill in its entirety, saying that the proposal to merge the Zimbabwe Gender Commission into the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission would reduce duplication of roles and save on administrative costs.
Additionally, contributors endorsed provisions allowing the sitting President to appoint up to 10 senators based on merit, arguing that this would bring critical skills and expertise into Parliament to strengthen law-making processes.
The Parliamentary Committee leading the consultations was chaired by Senator Kudakwashe Matibiri, deputised by Abigail Gava.
Other members of the committee present at this day’s event included Senator Chief Fortune Charumbira and Zvimba East legislator Kudakwashe Mananzva.
