ZANU-PF was last night headed for a landslide victory with the revolutionary party winning 53 seats out of the 63 announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec). The other 10 seats were won by MDC-T.
If the voting pattern in the National Assembly elections is anything to go by, then President Mugabe is also tipped to win the presidency resoundingly.
Zec deputy chairperson, Ms Joyce Kazembe announced the results of the National Assembly seats in some of the constituencies in Bulawayo, Matabeleland South, Masvingo, Harare, Mashonaland West, Central and East.
In Bulawayo Province, the Pelandaba-Mpopoma constituency seat was won by MDC-T’s Mr Bekithemba Nyathi (6 024) beating three other candidates.
In Nkulumane constituency, Mr Thamsanqa Mahlangu of MDC-T retained his seat by clinching 7 045 votes beating Mr Nkosana Mathe of MKD (37), Memorial Dube of Zapu (335), Mr Matshobana Ncube of MDC (1 404), Rhoda Ncube of Free Zimbabwe Congress (43) and Cde David Ndlovu of Zanu-PF (2 494).
Bulawayo South Constituency went to Mr Eddie Cross of MDC-T who got 6 364 votes beating Cde Bafana Dube of Zanu-PF who got 1 787 votes and MDC’s Esnat Bulayani who polled 1 078 votes. Zapu’s Marekere Brian got 105 votes while Joseph Gumbo of MKD polled 46 votes, with Gift House of ZMM managing 46 votes.
In Matabeleland South, Zanu-PF had won all the seats announced with Cde Never Khanye beating the former Speaker of Parliament, Mr Lovemore Moyo by 5 300 to 5 219 while Zapu’s Mr Nicholas Dube got 417 and MDC’s Mr Moses Ndlela 852.
In Matobo South, Zanu-PF’s Cde Soul Mahalima Ncube polled 4 692 against 4 596 for Mr Gabriel Ndebele of MDC-T, 764 for Mr Decent Bajila and 478 for Mr Joakim Moyo of Zapu.
In Beitbridge West, Zanu-PF candidate, Cde Metrine Mudau polled 6 194 votes beating MDC-T’s Moffat Ndou (2 241), John Tlou of MDC (371) and Aifheli Mudau of Zapu (311) and independent candidate, Thambulo Muleya (152).
Cde Edson Gumbo of Zanu-PF won the Gwanda Central seat when he garnered 7 467 against 4 048 for Ms Juliet Nkiwane of MDC-T, 2 571 for Mr Patrick Dube of MDC and 211 for Mr Mthetho Mlilo of Zapu.
Zanu-PF Politburo member Cde Abednigo Ncube bounced back into Parliament when he won the Gwanda South seat by polling 5 701 against Mr Ekem Moyo of MDC-T who got 2 866 and Mr Garfield Makwati’s 1 020 of MDC and 346 for Mr Robson Ncube of Zapu.
Former Radio Zimbabwe presenter Cde Malach Nkomo of Zanu-PF won the Insiza South seat beating former MP for the area Mr Siyabonga Malandu Ncube by 4 660 votes to 2 384 while Mr Ntandokayiphikiswa Nkomo of MDC-T got 2 007, Mr Ndambisamahubo of Zapu got 329 and Mr Dumezweni Dube, an independent polled 455.
In Masvingo North, Cde Davies Marapiwa of Zanu-PF got 10 358 while Cde Ezra Revayi won the Masvingo East Constituency by 7 634 votes. Cde Robson Mavenengwa of Zanu-PF polled 9 733 to win Zaka North constituency.
In Bikita West, Dr Munyaradzi Kereke who contested on a Zanu-PF ticket despite the party rejecting him won by 6 270 narrowly beating Cde Elias Musakwa, the official Zanu-PF candidate who polled 6 052.
Cde Berita Chikwama of Zanu-PF won Gutu East after polling 7 372 votes while Zimpapers board chairman Dr Paul Chimedza (Zanu-PF) won the Gutu South seat by 7 927 votes.
Cde Lazarus Matuke polled 9 311 votes to win the Gutu Central seat.
Cde Maphios Utete of Zanu-PF is the winner for Chivi South after polling 12 559 votes while in Chivi Central Cde Ephraim Gwanongodza also won by 12 559 votes.
Chiredzi East and Chiredzi South constituencies also went to Zanu-PF with Cde Danford Masiya getting 8 926 votes while Cde Calisto Gwanetsa got 8 148.
Zanu-PF’s Cde Jappy Jaboon of Bikita South got 9 397 votes while in Chivi North Cde Maphios Tongofa got 8 827 votes.
Zaka Central and West saw Cdes Paradzayi Chakaona and Mapetere Mawere winning by 10 604 and 7 340 votes respectively while in Zaka North Cde Rabson Mavenyegwa got 9 733 votes.
Masvingo Urban was won by Cde Daniel Shumba of Zanu-PF by 10 988 votes beating Mr Tongai Matutu of MDC-T while Mwenezi West was won by Cde Kudakwashe Bhasikiti who polled 18 196 votes.
Son of the late national hero Vice-President Simon Muzenda, Cde Tongai Muzenda, got 13 499 votes to win Gutu West Constituency while Cde Ticharwa Madondo got 6 845 votes to win Gutu North.
In Harare, Highfield East was won by Mr Eric Murayi (MDC-T) who got 8 494 votes ahead of Zanu-PF’s Cde Ida Mashonganyika and Onias Ndhlela (MDC) who polled 747, Zapu’s Ms Chritine Chifamba (76) and Mr Danny Dimbo of UMD who got 19 votes.
MKD’s Kudzai Saruwaka polled 37 votes while Free Zimbabwe Movement’s Godfrey Samanga got 34 votes.
Mr Moses Manyengavana of MDC-T garnered 6 825 votes in Highfield West ahead of Cde Emanuel Chita (Zanu-PF) who got 3 639 votes, Miriam Zengeni (MDC) who got 813 votes. An Independent candidate Mr Glen Dhliwayo got 67 votes while Zanu-Ndonga’s Sekai Rutire polled 31 votes.
In Sunningdale, Ms Margaret Matienga of MDC-T got 5 746 beating Cde Nyemba Maureen of Zanu-PF who got 3 005 votes and an independent candidate Mateza Musa (1567). MDC’s Musvevereki Matsveru got 557 votes while Voice of People’s Moreprecision Muzadzi got 38 votes.
In Mbare Politburo member Cde Tendai Savanhu polled 14 764 votes to beat MDC-T’s Mr Eric Knight (10 932 votes). Jabulani Charlie of MDC got 1 041 with Mark Norest Dube MMD getting 66 votes.
In Southerton, Mr Gift Chimanikire (MDC-T) won after polling 7 068 votes ahead of Cde Onesimo Gore (Zanu-PF) who got 3 245 and MDC’s Dadirai Jakobo who got 792.
In St Mary’s, Wunganayi Tarusenga polled 7 092 votes for MDC-T while Cde Tendekai Maswata (Zanu-PF) polled 5 524 votes.
In Chitungwiza North Mr Godfrey Sithole (MDC-T) polled 8 071 votes.
In Mashonaland West province, the Chinhoyi seat went to MDC-T candidate, Dr Peter Mataruse who polled 9 863 votes against Zanu-PF candidate, Cde Philip Chiyangwa who got 8 561 and Ms Sibongile Mugijima of MDC (543).
Hurungwe Central constituency was won by Zanu-PF’s Cde Godfrey Beremauro (12 708) after thrashing Simbarashe Takawira of MDC-T (4 267), Nicholas Chigwende, an independent (333) and Mac Dube of MDC (533). In Chegutu East, National Commissar Cde Webster Shamu of Zanu-PF won by 15 687 votes beating Tawanda Vhumo of MDC-T (2 713) and Maponde Moyo of MDC (434).
In Chegutu West, Cde Dexter Nduna of Zanu-PF got 11 130 to win the seat against Earnest Mudimu, an independent (212), Shelton Hwende of MDC-T (7 399) and Tagwirei Ngwenya of MDC (722).
The Mhondoro-Mubaira constituency went to Cde Sylvester Nguni of Zanu-PF after polling 10 153 votes against Honest Manhandu of MDC-T (4 473) and Christopher Mhondera of MDC (874).
In Norton Cde Christopher Mutsvangwa of Zanu-PF polled 10 592 to win the seat after beating Charles Mariro of MKD (129), Joyce Chinake of MDC-T (9 360), Sipho Gumede of MDC (894).
In Kadoma Central Cde Fanuel Phiri of Zanu-PF (9 571 votes) emerged a victor over Tendai Munyandiro of PINZ (220), Editor Matamisa of MDC-T (9 005), Thomas Marumisa of MDC (959).
The Sanyati constituency was won by Zanu-PF’s Cde Blessed Runesu (11 332) after beating Byron Nokore of MDC (330).
Muzvezve constituency went to Zanu-PF’s Cde Peter Haritatos (18 832) who beat Madock Machungadoro of MDC (569) and Patrick Musevenzo of MDC-T (3 029).
Cde Mike Gava got 13 476 votes for Zanu-PF in Mhondoro-Ngezi after beating Tirivanhu Juru of MDC-T (3 564).
Chakari constituency went to Cde Adrian Musiiwa of Zanu-PF who polled 19 540 after beating Asiyatu Phiri of MDC-T (1 642).
In Mashonaland Central, Zanu-PF had won two constituencies namely Mazowe South and Mt Darwin South where Cdes Fortune Chasi and Saviour Kasukuwere polled 11 431 and 19 680 votes respectively.
In Mashonaland East, Cde Tendai Makonde won the Murehwa North Constituency with 8 733 beating Mr Langton of MDC-T (2 141) while Cde Paddy Zhanda polled 11 874 to win Goromonzi North.
In Mudzi North, Cde Newton Kachepa polled 15 997 to beat Mr Anyway (MDC-T) and Mr Jimmy of MDC who got 1 857 and 501 votes respectively.
Zanu-PF’s Cde Beatrice Nyamupinga garnered 12 758 to beat MDC-T’s Mr Ian Makone who got 7 123 votes and MDC’s Mr Wonder Chinamhora who polled 540 votes in Goromonzi West.
Chikomba West went to Zanu-PF with Cde Mike Bimha polling 17 153 votes.
In Chikomba East Cde Edgar Mbwembwe of Zanu-PF polled 7 456 to beat Mr Lovemore Kadenge of MDC-T (2 445), Mr Knowledge Mufudza of MDC who got 493 and Mr Thomas Mudzingwa of Zanu Ndonga who polled 86 votes.
Cde Felix Tapiwa of Zanu-PF polled 7 723 to win the Chikomba Central Constituency.
In Murehwa South, Cde Biggie Joe Matiza of Zanu-PF got 17 368 votes while Cde Ladislus Ndoro, also of Zanu-PF polled 12 779 votes to win in Murehwa West.
In Seke Constituency Cde Phineas Chihota of Zanu-PF got 13 285 votes while in Mudzi West Cde Acqulinah Katsande, another Zanu-PF candidate polled 14 266 votes.
In Uzumba Constituency Cde Mudarikwa Simbaneuta of Zanu-PF got 21 421 votes while Cde Washington Masvaire, also of Zanu-PF polled 22 264 votes in Maramba–Pfungwe.
Marondera Central Constituency was won by Cde Ray Kaukonde by 9 378 votes beating Ian Kay of MDC-T.
Millions of Zimbabweans went to the polls to elect their President, Members of Parliament and Councilors in a one-day election that many independent observers described as peaceful and representative of the will of the electorate.
The country has 6,4 million registered voters, which is about 95 percent of eligible voters.
The revolutionary party performed so well that it would gain the much-coveted two-thirds majority in the National Assembly. Such strength in Parliament would enable Zanu-PF to amend the constitution, if necessary.
In the presidential race, Zanu-PF candidate, Cde Mugabe was favoured to win, also overwhelmingly. MDC-T leader, Mr Tsvangirai, Dr Dumiso Dabengwa (Zapu) and Professor Welshman Ncube (MDC) were challenging him. Mr Kisinoti Mukwazhe, who was seeking election to the top job withdrew at the weekend and threw his weight behind Cde Mugabe and Zanu-PF.
Mr Tsvangirai made the usual claims of rigging.
South African President Jacob Zuma on SABC News challenged Mr Tsvangirai to produce evidence to prove his claims that the election had been manipulated. President Zuma however refused to pass judgment on the election, saying he would do so when vote counting is over and results announced.
The African Union (AU) observer mission also endorsed the elections as free and fair. Head of the AU mission and former Nigerian president Mr Olusegun Obasanjo said this after he paid a courtesy call on Cde Mugabe at State House in Harare yesterday.
