THE media and relevant traffic safety stakeholders should work in tandem to raise awareness and deepen the understanding of the importance of road and rail safety to the population’s overall livelihoods.
Speaking at the United Nations road safety week commemorations, Transport and Infrastructural Development minister, Felix Mhona said it was incumbent on the generality of Zimbabweans to ensure safety prevails on all the country’s road networks.
This, he said, would safeguard infrastructure, goods and commodities.
“I believe that with a concerted effort from partners and the media, we can significantly reduce the railway safety dangers, by working together to raise awareness on the importance of road/ railway safety to our lives.
“Hence, it is everyone’s responsibility to introspect every time we use our roads and railway lines.
“I urge you to stop, look, listen and save lives to ensure we drive our country towards the right trajectory,” he said.
He said the number of cases of motorists and pedestrians being hit by trains is a serious challenge in the country.
“Equally worrying is the number of vehicles being hit by trains.
“Despite the numerous efforts to raise awareness, the cases continue to happen.
“The conflict between pedestrians and motorists as well as trains has been a major challenge to the nation.
“Although incidents have been sporadic in other parts of the country, some areas remain a challenge which warrants our attention,” he said.
