adminCape Town — A Mango passenger contacted 702 Talk Radio accusing the low cost SAA subsidiary of making passengers stand at the back of an allegedly overbooked Mango flight. The flight in question was Mango JE268 which departed King Shaka International in Durban en route to OR Tambo International in Johannesburg on January 30, 2014.
A 702 call moderator, who took the call said the person claimed he wanted to “discuss the introduction of a new aero-dynamic roof rack in the airline industry” and then proceeded to complain about passengers who were made to stand during a Mango flight.
Mango spokesperson Hein Kaiser said, “The passengers in question were rebate travellers who were seated on jumps seats with the cabin crew in the galley.”
A rebate traveller is an industry or airline staff member or individual authorised to travel on a jump seat by the commander of the flight.
“The airline’s experienced crew in fact requested these rebate travellers to view the safety briefing. While this required them to stand, all travellers on board were seated during take-off and landing, “ Kaiser said.
“No rules were broken and passenger safety was not compromised. Mango continues to be compliant to all legislative and regulatory requirements as stipulated by the South African Civil Aviation Authority and other bodies.” — Sapa
