The condition of livestock is still worrying despite recent rains that have been received in some parts of the country. Farmers’ unions have confirmed that grazing pasture was still scarce, especially in drought prone areas. Zimbabwe Farmers’ Union vice president responsible for livestock, Mr Abdul Nyathi said the condition of livestock was still bad in most areas as grass and trees were just starting to recover.
“We have had shallow rains and they have not been significant in terms of livestock grazings and browsings,” he said.
Mr Nyathi said most farmers were still relying on the Government stockfeed aid while others who had money were importing grass and hay from other areas.
Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers’ Union vice president, Mr Johnson Mapira said farmers in drought-prone areas were still struggling to feed their livestock. He said the recent rains were insignificant.
“We urge farmers to vaccinate their livestock and increase dipping intervals. Farmers have been dipping their livestock once every two weeks and now they should dip the animals weekly to reduce the outbreak of tick-borne diseases that are more prevalent during the rainy season,” he said.
