HE is now revered in Malawi, where he won five consecutive league titles before his appointment as Flames coach, but Kalisto Pasuwa never forgets his roots.

Pasuwa has once again remembered Chitungwiza, the town that raised him.

The record-breaking gaffer is playing a crucial role in junior football development programs in the dormitory town.

Pasuwa donated kits and footballs to the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League (CJFDL) in a gesture that will augment grassroots football development in the town.

The CJFDL has been running for more than three years and is one of the most vibrant junior leagues in the country.

The 2026 season kicks-off on March 21.

“This donation is not only a major boost for our Under-13 season opening tournament but also a powerful statement on the importance of investing in grassroots football development.

“It inspires young players to dream big and believe that their journey too can start right here in Chitungwiza,” said Livingstone Manhombo, the league’s vice chairperson.

“This is more than just equipment — it is an investment in the dreams of our young players.

“Coach Pasuwa’s journey from Chitungwiza to coaching at the highest levels is a powerful inspiration to our Under-13s.

“His gesture demonstrates that true legends never forget their roots, and today he has strengthened the foundation of grassroots football in our community,” added Manhombo.

Pasuwa won five consecutive league championships with Nyasa Big Bullets, making him the most successful coach ever to lead the Malawian giants.

Before moving to Malawi, Pasuwa had also won four straight league titles in a row with Zimbabwean football giants Dynamos between 2011 and 2014.

It’s a local Premiership record that has stood for 33 years.

Pasuwa also coached Zimbabwe’s national team at the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

His gesture has also been commended by the Ministry Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.

Principal Sport and Recreation Officer, Tawanda Chikono, said: “We highly commend the generous gesture by former Dynamos and Warriors coach Pasuwa, for donating kits towards the Under-13 tournament of the Chitungwiza Junior Football Development League.

“This contribution is more than just sportswear; it is an investment in the dreams, discipline and future of our young athletes.

“Grassroots development remains the foundation of national sporting excellence, and when icons like Pasuwa give back to the communities that shaped them, they inspire a new generation to believe that greatness is possible.”
