PASUWA IN DRESS REHEARSAL FOR FLAMES JOB

KALISTO Pasuwa’s appointment as the Malawi Under-23 coach could just be a stepping stone for him to eventually take over as the Flames gaffer.

Pasuwa will take charge of the Malawi Under-23 team at this year’s COSAFA Senior Challenge Cup in South Africa.

The tournament will be held in Durban next month. Malawian media reported yesterday that the Football Association of Malawi have settled for the Zimbabwean coach, who has been making waves in their country, after winning the league title a record five times on the bounce with FBC Nyasa Big Bullets.

FAM general-secretary, Alfred Gunda, confirmed Pasuwa’s appointment in an interview with the Nation newspaper.

“Since we will be sending a developmental team to the COSAFA Cup as the senior team will be busy with the [2026] World Cup qualifiers, Pasuwa has been appointed to take charge of the team.

“The nitty-gritties are yet to be finalised, but that is how we are proceeding.”

Even though his club said they were not aware of the arrangement, there will be no hurdles for Pasuwa.

The man who is now in charge of FAM, Fleetwood Haiya, was until December the Big Bullets vice-president.

He left that role when he became the FAM president after beating Walter Nyamilandu 23 to 13 in the poll.

Haiya has been working with Pasuwa at Bullets and this suggests the Zimbabwean coach’s path to the Flames coaching job is now clearer.

“They know each other well and this could just be a rehearsal for the big job,” said sources yesterday.

“The path for Pasuwa is very clear now.”
