Peaceful march held against sanctions

As the build up to the Sadc Day of Solidarity Against Sanctions on Zimbabwe gathers pace, the Broad Alliance Against Sanctions yesterday coordinated a peaceful solidarity march against sanctions at the United States Embassy in Harare.

President Mnangagwa is set to headline this year’s anti-sanctions commemorations next week on Tuesday which will also be observed in most African countries as progressive nations join hands in piling pressure on the United States and its Western allies to remove the illegal punitive measures.

This year’s event will be held under the theme: “Enhancing Zimbabwe’s Resilience through Economic Development and Engagement and Re-engagement”.

Taking the campaign to the people, a commemorative gala will be held in Zimbabwe’s third largest urban authority Chitungwiza where the country’s crème de la creme of artistes will perform. Sadc declared October 25 as the Day of Solidarity Against Sanctions on Zimbabwe and this year the campaign is coming on the backdrop of growing calls for the illegal sanctions imposed as punishment for land reform to be unconditionally removed.

Speaking after a peaceful demonstration around the American Embassy in Harare, Broad Alliance Against Sanctions co-founder and chair Mr Calvern Chitsunge said western countries should let Zimbabwe move on its own path as a sovereign nation.

The team is now clocking almost three years camped at the American Embassy pushing for the unconditional removal of sanctions against Zimbabwe. “We are going nowhere until sanctions are removed. We will mount pressure on daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis until the embargo is lifted.

“It is even our challenge to United Nations that if America remains imposing sanctions on Zimbabwe it should be their duty to remove it from the UN as there is no super nation than the other all are equal member states,” he said.

Another co-founder and spokesperson Sally Ngoni said the American regime-change agenda instigated at the height of the successful land reform has failed to work and America should just do the noble thing and lift sanctions against Zimbabwe.

“As graduates we hate the puppet parties that begged for sanctions as they have destroyed our bright future.

“How can we entrust someone who destroyed our future with power? If America knows what is good for it, it should just remove sanctions against Zimbabwe now,” she said.

Sanctions against Zimbabwe were pushed hard in the early 2000s following the Government’s successful implementation of land reform which sought to redress a skewed colonial land ownership system favouring minority white farmers.
