CIMAS iGO has rallied hundreds of cycling enthusiasts in Harare in a spirited call for healthier lifestyles as the medical aid society marked World Heart Day with its annual “Pedal to Wellness” event.
The event, held ahead of Heart Health Day today, attracted nearly 300 participants, including families and children, who cycled through the city to promote cardiovascular health and fitness.
In an interview, head of CIMAS iGO Dr Nicola Misi, said the initiative was designed to highlight the importance of active living in tackling chronic illnesses.
“Basically, we came here today to promote cardiovascular health,” she said.
“In commemoration of Heart Health Day, we are encouraging people to get active. We have noticed that we really have a problem with chronic diseases, so we’re trying to get people to live better, to be more active — and to do it in a fun way, just by cycling.”
Dr Misi said the turnout was encouraging and underscored the growing interest in preventative healthcare.
“We had almost 300 cyclists here today, including our children. You can come here with your family, you can do it by yourself.
“That is what we wanted here today. It is all about promoting wellness, good nutrition and active lifestyles,” Dr Misi said.
Cyclists who participated said the event was a reminder to prioritise health.
Ms Ruth Nyamutsaka, who cycled with her teenage son, said the ride was both fun and educational.
“Sometimes we get so busy that we forget to take care of ourselves,” she said.
“Today reminded me that even simple activities like cycling can keep our hearts strong.
“It was also a great way to bond with my son while doing something healthy.”
Another participant, Mr Tawanda Chikuni, a regular cyclist, said wellness must be treated as a personal responsibility.
“Heart disease is claiming lives and most of the time it is because of lifestyle choices,” he said.
“Events like these show us that exercise doesn’t have to be complicated. I cycle to work a few times a week and I can already feel the difference in my health.”
CIMAS iGO urged participants to maintain the momentum by incorporating exercise into their daily routines and engaging the organisation for further guidance on healthy living.
