RESIDENTS of Bulawayo’s Pelandaba West are reeling in shock following the discovery of a 37-year-old man’s body in a maize field near Pelandaba Cemetery, in what police suspect may be a ritual murder.
The victim, identified as Isa Yadini from Pumula East, was found with three stab wounds and lying in a pool of blood early yesterday morning. The gruesome nature of the crime has left the community shaken.
Robbery does not appear to have been the motive, as the victim’s valuables — including a mobile phone and cash — were found intact on his body.
Bulawayo police spokesperson, Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, confirmed the incident and said the body was discovered by a passer-by en route to Kelvin Industrial Area.
“An informant was on his way to Kelvin Industrial area on Friday morning when he saw a group of people gathered in a maize field. Upon approaching, he noticed a lifeless male body lying on the ground. He immediately alerted the police, and officers, including homicide detectives who attended the scene.
“The deceased was wearing grey track trousers, a blue jacket, grey shoes and a grey woollen hat. A search of the body revealed cigarettes, an Itel mobile phone, R299, a national identity card and US$37,” said Inspector Msebele.
She said the victim had sustained stab wounds to his right buttock, left thigh and left hand.
Police were able to identify the deceased after contacting his wife using the mobile phone found on his person.
A woman who was collecting water from a burst city council pipe near the scene said residents suspect the victim was attacked while walking along a footpath adjacent to Pelandaba Cemetery.
“He could have been attacked in the middle of the night while walking home. This road between Pelandaba West and the cemetery is commonly used by people commuting from the industrial area to Pumula East and parts of Old Magwegwe,” she said.
The incident has sparked fear and concern among locals, with many calling for increased security and lighting along the footpath, which is frequently used but poorly monitored.
Police investigations are ongoing.
