Penhalonga residents take council to task

PENHALONGA residents have blasted Mutare City Council for failing to provide clean water following the location’s disconnection from the Pungwe pipeline. They are now getting water from Chinyanjera Hills, a source they said was unsafe. The residents are complaining that the water from the new unhealthy water source is being pumped straight into their taps without being treated.

They were disconnected from the Pungwe pipeline from mid- August. Residents are travelling more than three kilometres to fetch clean water, running away from what is coming out of their taps. One of the affected residents, Mr Tapiwa Gowera said the situation was unbearable.

Gowera said: “We fear for our life because the water is dirty. We are now using more resources to look for clean water elsewhere. They should reconnect us to the Pungwe pipeline. “This is very unfair since we are paying bills. We are entitled to clean water and not the dirt that is coming out of our taps. We are humans and they should treasure our lives and not expose us to water borne diseases,” he said. Efforts to get a comment from the City Engineer, Mr Donald Nyatoti, were fruitless at the time of going to print as he was said to be out of office.
