THE 22nd ZANU PF National People’s Conference is far more than an annual gathering, standing as the most pivotal event on the party’s calendar for rigorous stocktaking of both successes and challenges.
As the ruling party’s supreme policy-making forum, it is here that the most critical, country-driving decisions are deliberated, formulated, and officially sealed.
The revolutionary party uses this platform to critically assess its journey towards Vision 2030, focusing intensely on key pillars like economic empowerment and value addition, ensuring its detailed resolutions directly inform and galvanise all aspects of national governance.
The conference theme, “Attainment of Vision 2030 Through Economic Empowerment and Value Addition,” underscores the party’s unwavering commitment to achieving upper-middle-income status by 2030.
This thematic selection is a strategic declaration, signalling the party’s dedication to placing national development and citizen welfare at the forefront of its agenda.
These themes are not mere slogans; they serve as a direct mandate for high-level policy discussions and produce tangible resolutions that translate directly into state action and national economic policy. This explicit link between the theme, the deliberations, and resulting governmental policy affirms the Conference’s role as the engine of the country’s strategic direction.
Beyond the formal presentations and networking opportunities, the annual conference is critically characterised by robust and informative debates that frequently help to shape the country’s political and economic policies.
These sessions are not mere formalities; they involve passionate, evidence-based exchanges between high-level government officials, opposition leaders, industry experts, and academics.
Participants engage in candid discussions on pressing national issues—from fiscal reform and infrastructure development to social welfare and foreign policy—with the outcome often being the refinement of existing policy or the genesis of new strategic directions that directly influence the legislative and executive agendas for the coming year.
This critical purpose for the conference was reiterated by President Mnangagwa, who is also ZANU PF’s First Secretary.
He stated that the gathering must recalibrate all cadres to deepen their appreciation of the party’s purpose as a mass movement implementing programmes and projects to serve the interests of Zimbabweans for shared prosperity.
The President made these remarks at the party’s headquarters in Harare on Tuesday while delivering a keynote address during the 388th ordinary session of the Politburo.
“The gathering is by no means routine but presents our party structures with another opportunity to consolidate the aspirations, ideas, observations and recommendations of the people of our great motherland, Zimbabwe. Our focus, therefore, must be on providing leadership and guidance for consolidating our unity and the party’s strength,” said President Mnangagwa.
“Further, we must grasp this moment to recalibrate all cadres to deepen knowledge and understanding of the nature and purpose of the party. We must ensure that the rank and file remain clear that all activities, programmes and projects, implemented by our ZANU PF-led Government, serve the interests of the majority of our people for shared prosperity.”
He said the holding of the conference was a demonstration of the party’s adherence and respect for its constitution, traditions and practices.
“The management of the conference itself must give us value for money and produce qualitative resolutions for high-impact results.” President Mnangagwa said.
He called for robust debate and thorough analysis of issues at the conference during committee deliberation.
“It is my expectation that those members of the Politburo who will chair committees of various conference agenda items will ensure that issues are thoroughly debated. Meanwhile, I commend you all, including our host province, Manicaland, for the unity of purpose demonstrated during the preparations of the conference,” said President Mnangagwa.
He said the success of the party was anchored on discipline and is rooted in the Zanu PF long established ideology.
“The people’s revolution, which our mass colossal party, ZANU PF, is championing, is like a flame whose light is sustained by following the correct line and our ideology, as well as discipline, patriotism and loyalty. In this spirit, as the conference roars into life, I call on us, the party’s Politburo, to continue to lead by example in uniting the party and nation, towards the growth of our revolutionary movement and prosperity of our motherland, Zimbabwe.”
The imperative for the conference to be an important gathering characterised by robust discussions that are meant to shape the country’s economic direction was made explicitly clear through President Mnangagwa’s statements.
His call for a “thorough analysis of issues” and “robust debate” during committee deliberations goes beyond mere procedural compliance, setting an expectation for participants to engage in deep, critical thinking necessary for generating qualitative resolutions for high-impact results.
This linkage between rigorous intellectual engagement and measurable outcomes confirms the event’s stature as the national engine for strategic policy formulation.
The President further cemented this point by stressing that the conference must ultimately produce resolutions that ensure the party’s programmes and projects “serve the interests of the majority of our people for shared prosperity.”
By tasking the cadres to “recalibrate” and deepen their understanding of the party’s purpose, he framed the debates as essential to aligning ZANU PF’s ideology with tangible national development objectives, particularly the ambitious Vision 2030.
In this way, the conference serves as the crucial mechanism for translating the revolutionary party’s broad philosophical mandate into concrete, implementable state action and guiding the nation’s economic course.
Ultimately, the success of the 22nd National People’s Conference hinges on the delegates heeding President Mnangagwa’s forceful direction to engage in genuine robust debate and thorough analysis of issues.
This active, principled participation is presented not merely as a requirement but as a core pillar for the long-term survival and prosperity of both the party and the nation as a whole.
