Peter Moyo faces litmus test

Only two months after his father’s demise, Moyo is highly expected to please his late father, Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo’s ardent supporters in the City of Kings.
The mid-week gig billed for the Amphitheatre will see Moyo rubbing shoulders with the country’s finest musicians.
The Young Igwe will battle it out with multiple award-winning superstar Oliver Mtukudzi, who like wine is getting better with age, jazz sensation Jeys Marabini, who will be defending his territory and sungura maestro Alick Macheso. Macheso will be out to prove that he is indeed the sungura giant in the country.

Music enthusiasts have been wondering whether Peter will fit into Tongai’s shoes and prove he is the new Igwe come Wednesday.
The obedient son has, since he took over from his father, strived to fulfil his late father’s obligations such as unfulfilled shows and contracts. Doubting Thomasses are still eager to see just how good Peter is or how he is fitting into his father’s shoes

Speaking to Saturday Leisure, Moyo said he indeed faces a real litmus test as he has not yet performed at a show of that magnitude.
“I am faced with a real test to please my father’s fans and performing in Bulawayo for  the first time. I am getting used to fans but I have never performed for a huge crowd before,” he said.

The Utakataka Express heir said he was working overtime to master most of his father’s tracks before composing his own next year.
“Right now I am still working on mastering my father’s tracks and singing them line by line,”   he said.
Asked how it feels performing alongside Zimbabwe’s finest he said:

“I am not afraid of them really but I respect them because they have come a long way and this is a learning curve for me. I hope I will learn one or two things from them,” said the new Igwe.
He said it was just a matter of time before he removes his father’s shoes and be himself.
“Right now I am still working on my father’s projects but my father was his own man, I want to build my own name, I will try to be like him but I will never be Tongai,” he said.

The Utakataka new kid who seems to have great potential has lately worked night and day to settle his father’s debts incurred over the duration of his long sickness till the time of his death.
The 22-year-old recently announced that he had finally settled the huge bills and is now ready to start on a new page.  His father succumbed to non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma cancer recently. Dhewa was one of the leading sungura heavyweights in the country who never went wrong when on stage.  His death left a huge gap in the music industry but with his talented first-born son Peter, it seems his legacy will continue.

The late Moyo last performed in the city earlier this year at Ayobar, formerly JZ Ebunandini, where he put up a superb performance.
“Bulawayo was my one of my father’s hunting grounds,”
said Peter.

“He was respected in this town and he respected his fans as well. The only  thing I can do right now to preserve his legacy is make sure that the band fires on all cylinders.”
Peter has of late joined the late Leonard Dembo’s sons Morgan and Tendai for live shows.

The Shutdown show is being hosted in the City of Kings for the first time by one of the country’s biggest music promoters, Chipaz Promotions.
Show promoter, Partson Chimbodza, popularly known as Chipaz, described the show as historic but was quick to add that Peter still has a long way to go.

“So far he is giving the people what they want, showing them that he is indeed committed to the cause that his father started. That is   good enough for now but I believe he needs to work extra hard to be at the level that his father was,” said Chipaz.

He said all systems were ready to roll and revellers should expect fireworks.
