Peterhouse’s first match was against Michaelhouse, who batted first and were let off the hook with five dropped catches and a missed run out to allow them to get to 193 in 50 overs.
Tapiwa Gadzikwa was outstanding with the ball and should have had a four-wicket haul. Thirty extras added to the poor fielding display. Peterhouse were poor with the bat and lack of match practice saw them being bowled out for 62. The second match of the tour was against Pietermaritzburg College in a declaration match.
Peterhouse restricted them (Pietermaritzburg College) to 289 off 65 overs with Gadzikwa again the chief destroyer with five for 50 in 15 overs.
Pietermaritzburg College were good and disciplined with the ball as they bowled out Peterhouse for a paltry 43.
Five catches behind the wicket, two batsmen bowled and one lbw decidsion indicated how disciplined the South Africans’ attack was. Four ducks in the middle order destroyed any effort Peterhouse had to make a decent game of it.
The third match was against Hilton College on a difficult wicket which had uneven bounce and Shawn Nyamusa made a slow but steady start and no wickets were lost after the first hour. Peterhouse steadily started to accelerate as they had wickets in hand and all batsmen contributed. With Shawn Nyamusa making 24, David Brent 38, Campbell Saul 30. and a brilliant knock by Daniel Moolman(captain) scoring 62 not out, Peterhouse got to a competitive total of 199.
The last 10 overs were played in thick mist so much that the players at the wicket could not be seen from the boundary.
Maybe the players should have come off 30 minutes earlier, so it made the Peterhouse effort all the more special.
Just when Peterhouse seemed to be doing well, the weather worsened over the lunch break and resulted in the match being called off. The final match against Kearsney College was rained off as the weather closed in for the next three days.
Players of the week was Gadzikwa who bowled very well. Brent and Nyamusa showed some form as the week went on.
Young Robinson showed guts and determination opening the innings against Hilton and batted for 90 minutes for a stubborn 10 runs. He also bowled well against Pietermaritzburg College in his debut match.
Hulley showed glimpses of his batting ability as did Saul.
Moolman showed excellent leadership skills and played a brilliant innings in appalling conditions.
