JUST a year into her professional writing career, author Phetha Mpala has made a striking debut with her novel Amakhosikazi Esinyeyo, earning her the “Best Matabeleland Writer” award at the Community Business Development Awards and Triple Book Launch held recently in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Mpala’s novel addresses pressing issues of moral and cultural decay within social corridors, focusing particularly on the dynamics of ill female behaviour.
In an interview, the Bulawayo-based author said the recognition came as a surprise.
“I’m happy to receive this award from afar, knowing it allows us to proudly represent our country in writing. I’m also grateful for the opportunity to showcase my work and for being recognised with this first award in my short career,” she said.
She said she is already working on a new title for next year, with the award fuelling her determination.
Speaking about the awards, Dominic Vundla, chairperson of Chefunye Social Association (CSA), said: “Our event, the triple book launch and Community Business Development Awards, was a ground-breaking celebration of creativity and innovation in our community. The project was a collaboration between Mercy Muda, a renowned author and Chefunye Social Association.
“The initiative began with a short story writing competition for young, up-and-coming writers aged between 16 to 35 years from various districts in Zimbabwe, including Tsholotsho, Bulilima, Hwange, Lupane, Nkayi and Bulawayo.
Five winning stories were selected and will be published in a book, with diverse cash prizes up for grabs,” he said.
The event also featured Mercy Muda launching two new books in IsiNdebele and English.
In addition to celebrating literature, the Community Business Development Awards recognised outstanding achievements in categories including Cross Border Transport, Hardware, Baking and Farming, Fashion, Arts and Design, among others.
Mpala was among a dozen writers from Matabeleland and the Bulawayo region who participated in the writing competition, which culminated in the publication of a book titled, “Izehlakala Zemvelo.”
Vundla announced that another community award ceremony will take place in Tsholotsho District at Chefunye Primary School on December 29, continuing the effort to recognise talented individuals and businesses in the region. — Follow on X @MbuleloMpofu
