WHEN Butho “BP” Phiri packed his bags for home after a stint with Namibia’s Young Africans, he wasn’t sure what awaited him in Zimbabwe’s unforgiving Division One trenches.
Months later, the 26-year-old attacking midfielder has become the spark behind Talen Vision’s rise up the Southern Region Division One log, combining flair with work rate in a campaign that has turned heads.
Phiri has been directly involved in 16 goals, nine strikes and seven assists, helping Talen Vision climb to fifth place on 53 points, two behind Casmyn FC. His blend of creativity and leadership has made him the heartbeat of the side.
“It’s not been easy adapting to Division One after coming from the Premier League,” he said. “The intensity and style of play are completely different. In the Premier League, you get more time on the ball. Here, it’s tighter, faster and more physical. You have to think and act quickly because defenders don’t give you any room to breathe.”
The former Whawha FC man admits the journey has tested him but says the hard work is paying off.
“Every game has been a learning experience and I feel I’m improving with each match. It’s been about staying focused, working hard and following the coach’s instructions. My dream is to finish the season as the top scorer, but the main goal is to help the team push for promotion.”
Phiri is just three goals behind Bulawayo Chiefs’ Anesu Saiti in the race for the Golden Boot, but his value to Talen Vision goes beyond the numbers. His vision, balance and composure under pressure have made him the player teammates look to when the team needs calm or creativity.
“Football at this level demands commitment, discipline and consistency. There are no shortcuts. Hard work really is the key,” he said.
“I’m proud of how far I’ve come, but I know there’s still a lot more to achieve.”
Born in 1999, Phiri’s love for football began at the age of nine. He grew up playing alongside talents like Daniel Msendami and was shaped by early coaches Lovert Mabunda at Santos Juniors (later Quality Foods) and Gugulethu “Gugsera” Dlomo at Ajax Hotspurs.
It was at Ajax that his talent truly took off. He became both the team and league top scorer, powering them into Division One alongside players like Reason Sibanda and Kelly Shiyandindi. His exploits earned him a move to Whawha FC in the Premier Soccer League, where he netted four times in the 2022 season before moving to Namibia.
In Namibia, Phiri proved his consistency, scoring eight goals in one and a half seasons with Young Africans. His return to Zimbabwe this year has been nothing short of a homecoming statement, of a player rediscovering his rhythm, ambition and purpose.
