Phiri, Nkomo fifties take Lady Chevrons past 200

HALF centuries from Loryn Phiri and Josephine Nkomo helped Zimbabwe women’s national cricket team, the Lady Chevrons post 203/7 in the third Women’s One Day International (WODI) against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at Queens Sports Club on Tuesday.

The duo enjoyed a 113 runs fifth wicket partnership, the second highest (for the fifth wicket) and the seventh highest (for any wicket) for the Lady Chevrons in 50-over cricket.

They started batting together in the 16th over with the team on 46/4, having lost three wickets for just one run. Their partnership was broken in the 43rd over.

Phiri top scored with 69 runs off 94 balls, her maiden WODI half century while Nkomo fell for 52 runs from 76 balls, her fourth half century in the format. They both hit four boundaries apiece.

There were also handy contributions from Modester Mupachikwa and Chiedza Dhururu who scored 19 and 17* runs respectively.

Athige Silva, Esha Oza and Indhuja Nandakumar picked up two wickets each for UAE. Michelle Botha took one.

UAE need 204 runs to win the match.

The four-match WODI series is tied at one-all.
