BULAWAYO residents are finding creative ways to escape the scorching temperatures, from swimming and enjoying ice-cold refreshments to seeking shade under trees and makeshift canopies, as a heat wave sweeps across Zimbabwe.

Temperatures in Bulawayo are expected to reach 35 degrees Celsius today, with the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) warning of three days of exceptionally high temperatures driven by increased daytime heating and reduced cloud cover.
As the mercury rises, everyday routines are being reshaped, with residents seeking relief wherever they can while taking precautions against dehydration, heat exhaustion and other heat-related illnesses.

Public swimming pools have become popular retreats, with people of different ages flocking to the water to cool off during the hottest hours of the day.
The pools offer a welcome escape from the sweltering conditions, with swimmers plunging into the water while others relax along the poolside in search of relief from the relentless heat.

On the city’s streets, staying hydrated has become a priority, with residents carrying bottled water and insulated tumblers as they go about their daily activities.
For others, the answer lies in refreshing seasonal treats, with chilled watermelon slices and ice cream providing welcome relief from the soaring temperatures.

Street vendors are also responding to the demand for cold refreshments, moving through busy areas with insulated ice boxes to keep their products chilled and customers refreshed.
Away from swimming pools and refreshment stalls, umbrellas, trees and makeshift canopies have become essential shields against the intense sunshine.

Residents conducting business outdoors are seeking whatever shade is available, while those working in exposed areas face the added challenge of managing the heat without interrupting their daily activities.
The MSD has urged the public, particularly outdoor workers, children and older people, to take precautions during the hot spell, including limiting prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and drinking plenty of water.

Residents are also encouraged to remain alert to official weather updates and follow guidance from the Department of Civil Protection.
In Bulawayo, the battle against the heat is unfolding in swimming pools, on busy pavements and beneath makeshift shelters, illustrating how residents are adapting to the punishing temperatures while trying to keep daily life moving.
