THE fourth edition of the Pink Out October Breast Cancer Awareness Under-17 girls’ basketball tournament will be held at Eveline High School on Saturday.
The tournament is organised by iBelieve Sports Academy, a Christian organisation with, whose vision is to impact and change lives through sports.
It is aimed at increasing awareness of the disease, its causes, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure.
During the competition, cancer awareness officials and doctors will address participants on issues concerning breast cancer.
“The tournament will also offer information and support to those affected by breast cancer. The disease has been on the increase in Zimbabwe so our main aim is to send the message through sport.
“We believe sport has a huge role in fighting this disease and we hope people will come in numbers to support us in this worthy cause,” said founder of iBelieve Sports Academy Allen Takudzwa Mavunga.
“We have been holding this event since October 2013 and over 1 000 girls have been impacted by this event thus far. iBelieve Sports Academy believes in the girl child and that they should be uplifted,” he said.
Twelve schools will take part in the tournament and each team will be required to pay an affiliation fee of $70 that will go towards payment of the officials and purchasing of medals.
According to the Zimbabwe Cancer Registry’s 2015 statistics, cancer cases have been on the increase with cervical cancer being rampant at 18 percent with breast cancer increasing by seven percent.
