Seed and chemicals producer Pioneer Hi-bred Zimbabwe says it has stocks sufficient to satisfy local demand for the next two years. The company has grown its market to become one of the top three seed houses in Zimbabwe. Pioneer managing director Mr Daniel Myers said the company would not plant seeds this season.
“We are not planting any seeds this farming season because we have enough to supply the country for the next two years,” he said.
“Our farmers will not have a challenge of seed shortage for the meantime time because we have enough in stock,” he said.
Mr Myers, however, said the company had increased prices for maize seed by 15 percent.
“We have not changed prices in the past three years,” he said, adding the liquidity crunch had slowed down sales.
“The liquidity crunch remains the biggest stumbling block. It has affected our sales because farmers are not receiving any credit from banks.
“The other issue that has lowered our sales is the late rains,” he said.
He urged farmers to strive to increase production for the country to achieve food security and cut on imports. —New Ziana.
