ZIFA technical development chairperson Kenneth Mhlophe says football will never be the same again following the passing of veteran administrator Cecilia Malunga.
Malunga died on Thursday after battling an illness. Condolence messages have been awash for the Highlanders life member who was also involved in the formation of the Bosso Supporters Bulawayo Chapter.
“This really is a sad loss to the football fraternity. She contributed a lot not only to women’s football but the game as a whole. Her love for the beautiful game is unmatched,’’ said Mhlophe.
Highlanders had this to say about Malunga’s death “We are deeply saddened by the passing on of Cecilia Malunga. We have been robbed of a great football icon and fan. May her soul rest in peace.”
Malunga occupied different administrative posts in football since forming her own football team, Sizimisele in 1995 in Lobengula West and then she was voted into office as treasurer of Women Football Bulawayo and later moved a rung higher to the regional structures assuming a similar post.
She later moved to Highlanders Royal Queens where she was the chairperson. Malunga was appointed to an interim committee that ran Sports and Recreation Commission affairs for a year in 2004 after allegations of impropriety against the then board.
After completing her tenure she returned to Royal Queens in 2006 until the dissolution of the team before she assumed the ZWF vice-chairperson portfolio in 2010.
