There will be more than just three points and pride at stake when Orlando Pirates play Mamelodi Sundowns at Orlando Stadium on Saturday. The winner of that match will be in line for a staggering R1.5 million, the prize money for the Q1 Qinnovation winners.Kaizer Chiefs won the Q2 and they are third on the Q1 table, tied on 15 points with SuperSport United and Moroka Swallows, who have all played their eight matches. The winner between the two giants, Pirates and Sundowns, at Orlando Stadium will take the big cheque home.
A draw will mean Pirates will need nothing short of a win in their next match to bag the big money.
If Pirates draw their next match against Free State Stars away, Pitso Mosimane’s charges will win the quarter due to superior goal difference.
Meanwhile, following his side’s second consecutive victory, Orlando Pirates interim coach Eric Tinkler said his charges deserved to walk away victorious after displaying a good character in their 2-1 win over his former team Wits on Tuesday night.
Bucs had to come from behind to conquer the Students in an exciting Absa Premiership clash at the Orlando Stadium, courtesy of Mozambican forward Helder Pelembe and substitute Kermit Erasmus’ well-taken strikes. Bafana Bafana forward and Wits captain, Sibusiso Vilakazi, was on target for Gavin Hunt’s men.
It was Tinkler’s first game in charge of the Sea Robbers following the departure of head coach, Roger de Sa, last Friday.
The former hard tackling Bafana midfielder did not hide his delights in the post match interview.
“Definitely great character indeed,” said Tinkler.
“We showed great character and a positive attitude not only here in the game but it all started at the training grounds. It’s just unfortunate again that we didn’t bury all the chances we created but I am happy with a win.”
Tinkler also hailed his troops for being a dedicated bunch. “We have a good squad and everyone is willing to contribute and by that I am proud of my players,” he added
Victory for the Sea Robbers meant that they moved two spots up to the 6th log position and will be looking to keep the winning momentum heading into this weekend’s encounter against their Pretoria rivals and title contenders, Mamelodi Sundowns.- Sport24.
