CHEGUTU Pirates coach, Tavaka Gumbo, yesterday admitted that their chances of survival in the World Navi Northern Region Division One soccer league were now slim after they suffered a 0-1 defeat at the hands of Blue Swallows on Wednesday at Manyame.

Chegutu had a bad campaign this season marred by controversy and infighting at the club.

And they are on the verge of being relegated after just two seasons in the Division One league.

There are three games to go before the curtain comes down on the league and Chegutu, 16th on the table, need more than a miracle to avoid relegation.

They have 29 points from 31 matches and if they win the remaining three games they will conclude their campaign with 38 points and they will need the teams ahead of them to drop at least six points.

Chegutu are likely to join relegated Royal Classic and Twalumba, who are also on their way out of the league.

Gumbo said they were preparing themselves for the worst but will soldier on to the last game of the season.

“Chances are now slim but we are going to play throughout the season. Yesterday’s (Wednesday) loss affected our campaign because if we win the remaining three games we will finish with 38 points and the other teams, about two to three teams, are going to surpass that.

“Actually, the players can see that we are no longer going to survive but we want to see if we can push for a better position.

“We want to play a beautiful game for our supporters and for our pride as well,” said Gumbo.

Gumbo said their strike-force was their biggest let down during the game against Blue Swallows.

Chegutu Pirates host Twalumba this weekend at Pfupajena in a-bottom-of-the-table clash.
