PITBULLS were crowned the 2018 Harare Province Exide Sevens Rugby Series champions despite losing their last match 19-40 to XP Horns at Belgravia Sports Club on Saturday.
The Jeffrey Madhake-coached side, who are also the current national Under-21 champions, managed to clinch the title ahead of established clubs such as Harare Sports Club, Old Georgians and Old Hararians.
Madhake was happy with the win and believes they are taking the right path in preparing future national team players for Cheetahs and Sables.
Having managed to claim the top spot after week two, the Eastlea based side never looked back and went on to claim the top accolade.
Supported by Sports for Life, who also specialise in boxing, Pitbulls had several former Churchill High School students who have made an impact at national level.
“We did well considering that we have managed to defeat some of the so-called rugby powerhouses in Harare and it pushed the boys all the way.
“The boys were training hard for each passing day and it is through hard work that we have managed to clinch the title. I think the defeat was a result of fatigue, we had many games throughout the five weeks and credit go to the boys.
“There is so much talent and most of the youngsters want to make a name for themselves so they work extra hard.
“The competition was very exciting as it brings together several talents from across the capital which is something we lacked before,” said Madhake.
Pitbulls came into the tournament as underdogs but managed to make an impact throughout the five competitive weeks.
The team came up against seasoned campaigners Harare Sports Club, Old Georgians, Alex Sports Club and Mbare Academy, among several others.
Madhake went on to praise Chloride Zimbabwe who, through their Exide batteries, sponsored the tournament.
“I think this will go a long way in promoting rugby as a sport. It has been long before we have tournaments of this magnitude so we are grateful and looking forward to continue with the fine performances in our next events,” he added.
