Feminism is not about making women strong because women are already strong; it’s about changing the way the world perceives that strength.
As a way of empowering the girl child Plan International in conjunction with Zimbabwe Art Gallery Bulawayo hosted a massive event to commemorate the Day of Girl last Tuesday through art running under the theme “With Her: A Skilled Girl Force”.
Silenkosi Moyo, who was the project leader, said it was a grand finale of the partnership with Plan that began in April.
“We are empowering the girl child through visual arts, we are fusing development and visual arts into the entire programming where we want to give a girl child through devolustic development, we are empowering them at the same time giving them leadership skills.
“Like girls have been saying the girl child is mostly dealt with a heavy hand when it comes to empowerment programmes and access to education, so this programme is significant as it gave life skills to girls. We want them to think and act differently as empowered girls,” she said.
From April the students from ten local schools were taken into art lessons and visuals of their works were exhibited on the day.
