Platinum firm to build houses for Norton cops

Great Dyke Investments (GDI) is considering providing decent accommodation to police officers in Norton under a programme to construct 1 000 houses for its employees.

This was said by the company’s chief operating officer, Mr Munashe Shava on Wednesday at a handover of blankets, kitchen utensils and various foodstuffs to nine families at Norton Police Station that lost property in a fire early this month.

The ceremony was attended by Minister of State for Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Mary Mliswa-Chikoka.

GDI is a platinum mine with operations in Darwendale.

“We are a company that operates within a community and we have values and one of the values is that we take care of our communities,” he said.

In her remarks, Minister Mliswa-Chikoka thanked the company for the assistance rendered to the affected families.

“I am excited about the level of patriotism and Ubuntu exhibited by GDI in extending this humanitarian support as a short-term intervention that will assist the affected families in a long way,” she said.

“We don’t underestimate this gesture and appreciate it entirely.”

Superintendent Inviolatah Mangeya thanked GDI for the assistance.

“This timeous donation will go a long way in assisting the families that were affected,” she said.

Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa praised the company for the donation and called on Government to provide decent accommodation for the affected families.

The houses were destroyed by fire caused by a gas leak in one of the houses before it got to the other eight.
