Platinum Queens continue dominance in NPL

DEFENDING champions Platinum Queens maintained their winning ways when dominating the weekend’s games in the Nedbank Premier Netball League.

The defending champions were on top of their game and prevailed over Stormers, Rhinos, Harare City and Harare District in matches played at Kuwadzana 1 High.

They beat Harare City 33-14 in their opening encounter before dismissing Harare District 51-17.

The Zvishavane-based side went on to beat Stormers 41-12. They also claimed a 29 -14 victory over Rhinos.

Platinum Queens coach Simbarashe Mlambo said they have been working on the mental side of their players to ensure they stay focused and avoid complacency, which has seen them dominating most the games.

“I think it’s all about not being complacent. I have been telling them definitely to remain focused, not to get above their heads, to just remain looking at the bigger picture. At the end of it all we must make sure that we are entertaining, and we are really focused.

“So it’s all about taking each game seriously and playing our hearts out, correcting the mistakes that we would have made. Before we face one or two difficult plays we need to adjust and make sure that we play our game, and we play according to instruction, and we defend as a team. So, it’s all about not being complacent,” said Mlambo.

The matches that were set for Beitbridge featuring Mvurwi, Beitbridge Border, Waterfalls and Mutare City had earlier on been postponed to a later date after Mvurwi and Waterfalls indicated they would not be able to travel.

However, PNL secretary general Liberty Mhizha said following further communication with the clubs, the matches were awarded to their opponents as they will not be able to fulfil the games before the final bubble set for early November.

“The postponed bubble results have been factored in because the concerned teams have indicated inability to fulfil those matches before the next bubble and have agreed on the walkover rule being applied.

“It’s a rather disappointing stance taken because our interest is to have games played not these walk overs but under such circumstances, we have no option but to do that,” said Mhizha.

Waterfalls and Mvurwi were supposed to face Beitbridge Border and Mutare City. The two teams were also supposed to face each other in their return fixture.

The other matches were played in Marondera.
