Revellers who graced the venue for its opening were all in praise of the comedy, that stars a line up of celebrities that includes Kudzai Sevenzo, Nothando Lobengula, Prudence Katomene-Mbofana, Edmore Sandifolo, Tendai Musoni and John Pfumojena.
Gavin Peter, Edgar Langeveldt, Walter Mparutsa, Michael Kudakwashe and Ben Mahaka also make appearances in the comedy.
Co-produced by Katedza, South African film producer Jackie Cahi and Bridget Pickering of Namibia, Playing Warriors revolves around the lives of four urban women in their 30’s.
It tells a common story of modern women struggling to level their lives with tradition and their parents’ expectations.
Kudzai Sevenzo plays Nyarai the lead character.
Nyarai is a career-centred woman caught up between two men, toy boy Che (John Pfumojena) and an older and mature boyfriend, Leslie (Edmore Sandifolo) who her family is pressuring her to marry.
Drama unfolds as the quartet try discovering themselves with consideration of their families and society.
Renowned filmmaker Tsitsi Dangarembga applauded the film.
“It is a well-written film that will put Zimbabwe back on the map. The production value might not be as good, but it is certainly a positive step in the right direction for the film industry” she said.
Co-producer Bridget Pickering said the film maintains an international appeal since the story line is a common one.
“It is a universal story that women from different cultural backgrounds would relate to. This film is about women, by women but for every one to enjoy” she said.
The premiere lived up to its billing as it was well attended drawing a sizeable crowd to the 7 Arts.
Playing Warriors was produced with financial support from the Goteborg International Film Festival Fund and the French Foreign Affairs ministry, Fonds Images Afrique as well as with local support from the Culture Fund of Zimbabwe Trust and the Zimbabwe International Film Festival Trust.
