FIVE rugby players have been signed with New Zealand clubs in Christchurch and are set to have their first dance in the land of the All Blacks in January. Mkululi Ndhlela, Brian Dube, Itai Nyakatsamba, Kelvin Kumadiro and Tawanda Chowe were identified during national 15s and sevens tournaments in which their class shone through. Former Zimbabwe international, James “Jimbo” Nyatanga, is behind the scheme to help promising local players get attachments Down Under.
“I am one of those former players whose lives were changed by rugby in Zimbabwe and I want to give back to the community,” said Nyatanga.
“I remember I played for overseas clubs for 10 years before coming back to my country Zimbabwe and the experience was awesome.
“I believe these guys have more talent and potential that we had in my days and it is only fitting that we give them opportunities and exposure.”
It’s not easy to get the attention of New Zealand clubs as they already have a vast pool of talented players in a country where rugby is a virtual religion. Nyatanga said next year they were hoping to increase the number of players on scholarships.
“James Lee Rugby Academy’s key to success would be to bring in the best players and qualified certified coaches to educate and enhance the administration and understanding of rugby.
“Next year we hope we will be able to get assistance from the corporate world so that we can expand the number of players,” Nyatanga said.
