ZIMBABWE’s leading golfers Brendon De Jonge and Ryan Cairns made the cut at the Alfred Dunhill Championships at Leopard Creek Country Club in Mpumalanga, South Africa, yesterday. De Jonge, the country’s sole representative on the USPGA Tour last season, made the cut after a good second round in which he shot a two-under-par.

He opened his account with a one-over-par on day one.

Cairns maintained his good run by shooting another three-under-par score yesterday and will go into today’s third round in 20th place.

The bulky De Jonge, playing in South Africa for the first time in 16 years, had hinted that he will find the course a little different from what he is accustomed to in the United States.

Yesterday, having got a bit of knowledge of the course on day one, he hit five birdies, 11 pars and two bogeys to finish on position 26.

Meanwhile, Peter Banda and Ignatius Mketekete were joint leaders at the US$15 000 Hwange Open which got underway yesterday.

The duo carded an impressive four-under-par 67 in the first round and will be in the same ball this morning when the second round tees off.

Mketekete who used to stay in Bulawayo and Banda, who is based in the City of Kings, appear to have an edge over their opponents.

Tongo Charamba came out of the Harare Open with a promise that he was ready to putt better and, if he can do so, he has a chance of winning tournaments. He did well yesterday and was tied with Robson Saurombe on three-under-par 69. Grant Hudson is on one-under-71 going into today’s round. Anywhere and Simon Katembenuka were tied with defending champion Brian Gondo on level par.
