Events in recent years have left me convinced that soccer planners need financial advisors more than player agents.
Why I say so is because it worries to see players showcasing their talent for decades and after that he/she has nothing from his or her sweat.
This is going on from generation to generation.
I believe a player manager or agent is someone who is there while you are still in peak performance and able to move from one club to the other, making some money for yourself and of course the manager or agent in signing on fees, but a financial advisor will stick with you through thick and thin.
As footballers, we have made mistakes in the past and the same is still happening to the crop that is active now.
A financial advisor is someone who would advise a player on what to invest on as he/she knows your financial background.
It does not matter how much or how little money you earn, with proper guidance and advice, one can still invest on something worthwhile for the future.
The current generation can change the perception of the society who say “abantu bebhora abacabangi, badla imali butshapha”. The current crop of players must not be ignorant to seek advice from former players because “he who feels it knows it better”.
We can look at this problem in isolation to former players and current players, but when looked at in a broad sense, it can bring positive results.
Clubs have engaged fitness trainers, dieticians, welfare managers and psychologists. And why not engage financial advisors for players?
This is a unique carrier that we should not take for granted because we use legs to earn a living, while in a normal work scenario hands are used.
This means being a footballer is different and shows that one has a special talent.
Let’s not be heroes during playing times and villains when we retire and be treated like used condoms.
