Sundaymail EditorAFTER successfully defending his World Boxing Council International welterweight belt in Zambia last weekend, Charles Manyuchi’s wish now is to present his “trophy” to President Mugabe.
Manyuchi strengthened his record to 15-2-1 when he knocked out Devis Caceres of Colombia in the second round at the Government Complex in Lusaka.
His exploits have largely gone unnoticed locally despite commanding a massive following in Zambia where the ministry of sports in that country is said to be mulling offering Manyuchi Zambian citizenship.
However, the 26-year-old boxer, who is based at Oriental Quarries boxing stable in Lusaka, has always maintained his pride in being a Zimbabwean and is unlikely to take up the offer.
“It pains me a lot to realise how my own countrymen don’t recognise my achievements. When I go to fight against those international boxers, I am representing Zimbabwe and I have always declared Zimbabweans are not losers. When I win I win for Zimbabwe.
“I went out on a successful hunting mission, representing the nation and now my wish is to present the trophy to His Excellency President Mugabe.
“I know he is a staunch follower of sport and his resilience has also inspired me inside the ring,” said Manyuchi, who is back in his hometown of Masvingo.
Back in March, when Manyuchi clinched the WBC belt after defeating Ghanaian champion Patrick Allotey in Lusaka, the Minister of Tourism and Hospitality Industry, Walter Mzembi, publicly made a promise:
“As a ministry we package everything and this includes people. So we are going to take his (Manyuchi’s) glory to His Excellency, who is the first Wonder of the country so he may be invited for a pat on the back.”
Due to protocol, there are processes involved for that to happen, but how sweet it would be for the patriotic sportsman to have his dream come true!
