THIS week, we feature the Northwold block of flats, which was commissioned 52 years ago, according to the caretaker.
It is an upmarket residential flat right in the Avenues area of Harare.
What is particularly exciting is the flat garden, which is maintained by two gardeners, who have been at it for more than 10 years.
The impression a visitor gets is that it is a place of luxury. Right from the entrance, you will be impressed by a row of potted roses, with the white alyssum acting as a ground cover.
Another grouping of potted calendula in bright yellow invites you in.
According to one of the caretakers, the garden is ideal for relaxing, with the place filled to capacity in summer. The fountain in the middle acts as an additional attraction.
The garden is so neat and orderly that it will leave a lasting impression on the visitor.
It offers children a safe haven, where they can play freely, under the watch of security personnel.
Coming to the garden design, various planting combinations were employed.
You will not miss the mass plantings of the delicious monster (monstera deliciosa) under the impressive shade of the old mahogany trees that line the car park.
The brick walkway is softened by the mondo grass, with a grouping of the white arum lily (zantedeschia aethiopica) complementing the white alyssum.
The place is more of a tropical paradise given the various shade plants that you will find. These include calatheas, bizzy lizzies, agapanthus, the elephant ear and the cordyline.
The green lawn makes the atmosphere soothing.
The peace in the flat garden is in total contrast to the noise across the fence, arising from the traffic along Josiah Tongogara Road.
Various other items — including lights, hanging baskets, swings and garden chairs — have been incorporated to enhance the beauty of the place.
